The politician Trond Giske was for many years the “crown prince” of the Norwegian Labor Party. But when this left-wing party loses popularity and the #MeToo movement raises awareness about sexual harassment, the tide turns for the once-so-popular Giske.

GABI, BETWEEN AGES 8 AND 13

Engeli Broberg / Sweden / 2021 / 78 min / Dutch Premiere

Debut director Engeli Broberg follows Gabi for five years, from a young girl who doesn’t understand why there should be a difference between boys and girls, to a self-conscious adolescent who increasingly follows her own path, but whose body is also changing under the influence of female hormones.

KIDS CUP

Line Hatland / Norway, Denmark, Finland / 2021 / 90 min / Dutch Premiere

Ambitious young soccer players from China, Brazil, United States, Palestine, and Norway have been training for months to take part in the Norway Cup, a top-level international tournament. With rapid-cut editing and an uplifting soundtrack, the film follows several of these players—all about 14 years old—from their home country, where they train for the last time and pack their bags, to the Norwegian capital Oslo, where they settle into in their lodgings, play matches, and hang out with teammates.

THE BANALITY OF GRIEF

Jon Bang Carlsen / Denmark / 2021 / 71 min / International Premiere

In an attempt to get his life back on track after the death of his wife Madeleine, Danish director Jon Bang Carlsen grabs his camera and throws himself into shooting a new film. But every time he looks through the viewfinder, he sees things that make him realize she’s gone. His film thus becomes, as he puts it, “a little stammering love letter.”

A PEOPLE’S RADIO – BALLADS FROM A WOODED COUNTRY

Virpi Suutari / Finland / 2021 / 27 min / Dutch Premiere

What fires the soul of a Finn? An array of scenes of summery Finnish landscapes, in the city as well as the countryside, accompanies messages from listeners to the popular radio program Kansanradio, meaning “People’s radio.” They speak their minds, to no one in particular, on a broad spectrum of subjects, ranging from a plan to stop using shampoo to airing political views, and from the grief over a lost partner to struggles with religious faith and rage about a neighbor’s noisy drilling.

SONG TO BERGSLAGEN

Nina Hedenius and William Long / Sweden / 2021 / 111 min / International Premiere

The hidden boundaries of the Bergslagen region, which spans multiple provinces of central Sweden, are defined by the presence of iron ore beneath its surface. The passage of the seasons forms a framework for views of the past, present, and future of this densely forested area, subtly underlining the changes that are now occurring. Many of the mines have closed down, but the traditions of yesteryear still remain.

FLEE

Jonas Poher Rasmussen / Denmark, Sweden, Norway, France / 2021 / 90 min / Dutch Premiere

No one else knows all the details of his escape, not even his partner. The film’s director Jonas Poher Rasmussen nonetheless manages to get his school friend Amin to open up about his journey from 1980s Afghanistan to Denmark of today—with the promise that he will remain completely anonymous.

HOW TO KILL A CLOUD

Tuija Halttunen / Finland, Denmark / 2021 / 81 min / Dutch Premiere

What if we could control the clouds? It’s a question that energizes the Finnish scientist Hannele Korhonen. She is specialized in geo-engineering—intervening in natural processes to influence the climate. A research grant of 1.5 million dollars, provided by the United Arab Emirates, offers her an opportunity to conduct a study into the artificial generation of rain in the desert.

OUR MEMORY BELONGS TO US

Rami Farah / Denmark, France, Palestine / 2021 / 90 min / Dutch Premiere

How do you survive? By forgetting or by remembering? This eternal question is still very alive for the three Syrian activists Yadan, Odai, and Rani. Before the war they were, respectively, a law student, a lover of literature, and a volleyball champion. In 2012, Yadan crossed the border into Jordan, carrying a hard disk containing more than 12,000 videos shot by himself and other citizen journalists in Daraa, the birthplace of the Syrian revolution. In this emotion-laden documentary, the old friends meet again in an empty theatre in Paris after a long period of separation.

RAISING A SCHOOL SHOOTER

Frida Barkfors and Lasse Barkfors / Denmark, Sweden, France, Belgium / 2021 / 74 min / Dutch Premiere

As the disaster of yet another school shooting hits, some parents are faced with a brutal fact: Their child was the one pulling the trigger. Jeff’s son Andy shot and killed two classmates and wounded thirteen other students when he was 15. Andy is serving 25 to life. Clarence’s son Nicholas killed his teacher and wounded another teacher in 1988 and is serving life. Sue’s son Dylan was one of the two teenagers behind the Columbine Massacre in 1999. Dylan committed suicide. Through deeply personal stories the film explores guilt, denial, failure and responsibility, harassment, sorrow, friendship and love.

ARTIFICIAL AWAKENING

Jakob la Cour / Denmark, Austria / 2021 / 20 min / International Premiere

One of the key questions surrounding AI is whether an intelligence programmed by humans and created by machines can be called conscious. This immersive VR performance puts a metaphysical twist on this question and asks how AI can develop a spiritual consciousness. To explore this, director Jakob la Cour invited a team of artists and experts to engage in conversations and collaboration with various forms of AI. The result is a highly immersive, multi-sensory experience within a virtual environment.

Patricia Bbaale Bandak

Denmark

Patricia Bbaale Bandak was born in Uganda in 1987. In 1989 she fled to Denmark along with her family, where she grew up on the little island of Falster. In 2015 she got in to the acclaimed National Film School of Denmark. Patricia graduated from film school in June 2019 and is currently in development with her first feature-length documentary film “Better I Go Suffer”, for which she won the main prize in the Nordic Talents pitch competition. Simultaneously, Patricia is working on her fiction feature film debut “Wannabe” and multiple TV-series as both writer and director.

Victor Cunha

Denmark

Victor Cunha (1988) is originally from Salvador, Brazil. He moved to Denmark with his family in 1995. Victor graduated from the acclaimed National Film School of Denmark in 2019. Prior to film school Victor worked at Danish broadcaster DR on TV-series such as “The Killing”, while concurrently producing short films independently. In 2019 he co-founded Monolit Film, a production company driven by filmmakers who provide unique perspectives on significant issues and challenge the understanding of ourselves and the world we live in. Victor is currently in development with several feature films, TV-series and a documentary.

Anna Antsalo

Finland

Anna Antsalo is a film director and cinematographer living in Helsinki, Finland. She studied film at Lahti University of Applied Sciences/Institute of Design and Fine Arts 2004- 2008. She has worked in theatre productions as a set designer and video artist and made art projections for musicians. Between 2012 – 2014 She directed several documentary series for children at the Finnish broadcast company YLE. Her debut documentary film, Momentum (2015), produced by Tuffi Films, has been awarded at the Helsingin lyhytelokuvafestivaali / Helsinki Short Film Festival and screened at festivals around the world. In 2016 she attended Uniondocs Summer documentary Intensive workshop with ‘Walk the Tideline’. It is Annas’ debut long documentary film, produced by Venla Hellstedt and Juha Löppönen for Tuffi Films. ‘Walk the Tideline’ was the opening film at Docpoint 2021 and got its international premiere at CPH:DOX 2021. Annas’ main themes tangle around humans’ relationship to nature. Characteristic for Anna’s work is playing with perspectives and the tension between chaos and discipline.

Davíð Hörgdal Stefánsson

Iceland

Davíð is a writer, poet, and literary critic who has taught creative writing for years and published poetry and short story collections and teaching material on Icelandic, literature and creativity. He followed Jóhann Jóhannsson’s music career closely for a long time and a year after his death, Davíð published two comprehensive articles about his career in an Icelandic culture magazine. These articles sparked the collaboration on a documentary and a bookwork between Davíð and Orri Jónsson.

Orri Jónsson

Iceland

Orri Jónsson is a photographer, musician, and flmmaker. His photobook, Interiors, was published by Steidl in 2011 and forthcoming in 2022 is his next photobook. His work has been widely exhibited in Iceland and Europe. As a composer he has, along with long-time collaborator Dagur Kári, composed music to several flms and together they have released four albums under the name Slowblow. In 2011 he co-directed the award winning documentary flm, Grandma Lo-Fi: The Basement Tapes of Sigríður Níelsdóttir.

Julie Lunde Lillesæter

Norway

Julie Lunde Lillesæter is a Norwegian filmmaker who runs the Oslo-based production company Differ Media with Julia Dahr. As a director and cinematographer, Julie combines a strong visual eye with a commitment to social change. She has directed a number of short documentaries, including The Dry Valley (Witness – Al Jazeera & NRK, 2018) and When Pride Came To Town (Aftenposten & NRK, 2019). Julie’s cinematography on the documentary feature Thank You For The Rain (2017) has landed her multiple awards, including a WIFTV award for Best Cinematography. In 2018, she was named Norwegian Video Journalist of the Year, and in 2020, she was listed on Forbes’ 30 under 30 list. Julie is currently directing her first feature, An Army of Women.

Anastasia Kirillova

Sweden

Anastasia Kirillova is an award-winning international documentary filmmaker specializing in emotionally charged storytelling with a strong cinematic imprint. Her documentaries have been screened at major film festivals around the world, with her latest film, ‘Sleepers’ Beat’, winning the Sheffield Doc/Fest Award for Best Documentary. Of Russian-Swedish heritage, she trained as a director at the Royal College of Art in London. The UK, which subsequently became her second home, is where she also forged her film career – not only as a director – but also a creative force in film development. Specialized in writing and pitching film projects, she has an extensive track record of developing directors’ treatments and winning commissions alongside a wide range of established directors of fiction and documentary.
